What started as a routine customer interaction turned into an unexpected rescue mission last week at the Material Recovery Centre (MRC).

A customer arrived at the landfill worried that his cat, Moze, had accidentally been hauled away inside a couch after a moving company removed furniture from his home. Believing the cat may have crawled inside before the furniture was loaded, he came to the landfill hoping it wasn't too late.

A handwritten note saying: "Thank you! Moze is very loved. Thank you for helping her get home."
A thank-you note from Moze's owners

MRC staff sprang into action. They located the customer's couch in a bin that had already been covered with garbage, methodically checking the furniture and pulling apart cushions. Just as they were about to give up, one employee noticed the couch's circular armrests and decided to take one last look.

After carefully opening one up, he spotted a tiny glimpse of fur inside. It was Moze – alive, breathing, albeit slightly dirty. The cat was safely rescued from the couch and reunited with his grateful owner, who was amazed by the effort staff had gone to on behalf of both him and his pet.

For the MRC team, it was an unexpected reminder that no two days on the job are the same. It was an unusual situation, but one that showcased the quick-thinking and dedication of staff determined to help a customer find a beloved family pet.
