While fall is in full swing, City of Saskatoon golf course maintenance staff are already looking ahead to spring.

Winterizing the golf course and greens is carefully timed to protect turf before temperatures and weather conditions become less predictable. Even when snow is not yet in the forecast, completing this work early gives the golf course and greens the best opportunity to remain healthy through the winter and return to a vibrant green in the spring.

A tarp is applied to a golf course to prepare for winter.

The work begins with a fungicide application to help guard against winter turf diseases. Crews then cover each green with a tarp, add a layer of flax for insulation and airflow, and then secure it with a second tarp. This protective layering helps keep the greens at approximately 5°C, throughout the cold winter.

Every course has different turf conditions, so greenskeepers also test products on small sections of greens to see which approach best preserves turf health. Those results help guide future maintenance practices across the City’s golf courses.

The final day at Silverwood Golf Courses was October 18 and Holiday Park and Wildwood closed on October 19. The driving ranges at Silverwood and Holiday Park will remain open until October 25.

Thank you to everyone who visited the courses. We look forward to welcoming you back in 2027.
