Saskatoon’s parks, rooted in a long history of thoughtful planning, provide vital spaces for recreation, health, and community connection while being carefully maintained to support a vibrant and sustainable city.

In Saskatoon, parks are part of everyday life. They are places to walk, play, relax and connect. Whether you visit a small neighbourhood green space or a large sports field, each one helps make the city a welcoming place for everyone.

Saskatoon’s commitment to parks dates back more than a century. As the city grew after its founding in the early 1880s, planners recognized the importance of green space for both recreation and community well-being. Over time, this vision has expanded into a large, connected green network that includes neighbourhood parks, sports fields, natural areas and the river valley.

Today, the city maintains 258 Parks and Green Space sites comprised of 1083 hectares of land, 308 outdoor sports fields, 204 kms of pathways and 154 playgrounds.

Why parks matter

Parks do more than provide space. They play an important role in overall quality of life. They offer places where people can be active, unwind and connect with others in meaningful ways.

  • Physical health – Parks make it easy to stay active, whether that means walking, running, cycling or playing sports. Access to nearby green space encourages regular movement and helps people build healthy habits at every age.
  • Mental wellness – Time spent in nature can reduce stress, improve mood and promote a sense of calm. Quiet green spaces, tree-lined pathways and river views offer a break from busy daily routines and help people recharge.
  • Community connection – Parks bring people together. They are gathering places for families, friends and neighbours, whether for organized events, casual meetups or shared activities. These shared experiences help create a sense of belonging.

When people spend time in parks, they do more than enjoy the outdoors. They build relationships, strengthen community ties and contribute to vibrant, connected neighbourhoods across Saskatoon.

Caring for our green spaces

Behind every well-kept park is a dedicated team working year-round. The City of Saskatoon maintains over 2,300 hectares of parks, sports fields and open spaces, each requiring different levels of care.

These efforts ensure parks are safe, clean and accessible. During the busy summer months, crews mow irrigated parks weekly and maintain amenities like playgrounds, pathways and sports fields to high standards.

The City also focuses on sustainability. Naturalized areas, such as grasslands and wetlands, are designed to reflect prairie ecosystems and require less intensive maintenance while supporting biodiversity.
