The City of Saskatoon is more than just the services residents see every day. Behind the scenes, more than 2,700 employees work together to help keep our community safe, connected and thriving.
Many residents are familiar with firefighters, police officers and Transit operators, but may not know about the teams working every day to improve traffic safety, maintain transportation infrastructure and support active transportation across Saskatoon.
To help shine a spotlight on the people behind this important work, we sat down with Justine Marcoux, a Senior Transportation Engineer who has been with the City of Saskatoon for 15 years. We spoke with Justine about her career journey, her role with the Transportation team and what she enjoys most about her work.
What made you decide to pursue engineering and city planning?
Justine: This goes way back to high school when I had to choose a university program before graduating. I chose engineering because I liked math. Simple as that. 😊
What are your responsibilities as a Senior Transportation Engineer?
Justine: Most of my portfolio includes signs, pavement markings, neighbourhood traffic management and active transportation. We receive a lot of requests from businesses and homeowners for signs, intersection reviews, pedestrian crossing reviews and traffic controls. We also review traffic safety concerns such as speeding and shortcutting.
What does an average day look like for you?
Justine: Most days are spent responding to customer concerns, followed by collaborative team meetings and check-ins with colleagues, as I supervise some of their projects and tasks.
How would you describe your experience as part of the Transportation team?
Justine: I've been with the Transportation team since 2011, and our group has definitely grown and evolved since then. I've appreciated the variety of projects we get to work on, as well as the collaboration within the team. My colleagues have always been supportive and encouraging. I genuinely enjoy coming to work each day, and that's due in large part to the great group of people I get to work with.
Which projects are you most proud of from your time with the City?
Justine: While the program concluded in 2021, I'm proud of my time working with residents and stakeholders through the Neighbourhood Traffic Reviews. We accomplished so much together and built strong relationships with the public. Working with residents in more than 60 neighbourhoods across the city, we developed solutions together to address traffic safety concerns.
Justine is just one member of a larger team who help keep Saskatoon moving every day. Through their expertise, collaboration and commitment to service, Transportation employees work to make our streets safer and more accessible for everyone.
We hope you've enjoyed learning more about Justine and the Transportation team. Stay tuned for future employee spotlights as we continue introducing the people behind the services that make Saskatoon a great place to live.
