Whether you're heading downtown for an appointment, meeting friends for coffee, or running errands, parking is one less thing Saskatchewan veterans need to worry about in Saskatoon.

The City of Saskatoon offers free parking on the street in parking zones for Saskatchewan veterans who display an SGI-issued veteran license plate. The program is a simple way to recognize the service and sacrifices veterans have made for our communities and country.

How it works

Veterans with an SGI-issued veteran license plate can park in any City on-street pay parking zone without paying the hourly parking fee. The program applies throughout Saskatoon and eliminates the need for veterans to register separately with the City.

While parking is free, posted time limits still apply and the program does not extend to public or private parking lots.

From pilot project to permanent program

In 2023, City Council approved making the veteran parking program permanent following a one-year pilot project. The pilot evaluated impacts on parking revenue, parking availability and usage, while also gathering feedback from users and stakeholders. The results showed minimal impacts and strong support for continuing the program.

The updated program also simplified the process for veterans by recognizing SGI-issued veteran license plates as proof of eligibility. Veterans who qualified under the previous City program continue to qualify today.

More than a parking perk

For many veterans, the program isn't just about saving a few dollars on parking. It's a visible reminder that their service is appreciated and recognized by the community.

As part of its commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming city, Saskatoon continues to look for meaningful ways to acknowledge those who have served.
