Go see the caribou at Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo and learn about the important role they play in Canada.

Looking for a fun way to spend a summer day in Saskatoon? Stop by the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo to see one of Canada’s most iconic animals up close. World Caribou Day was on June 6 - a great reminder to learn more about caribou and the important role they play across the country.

As you wander through the Zoo, make your way to the caribou habitat and spend a few minutes watching the herd. You might notice something unexpected. A soft clicking sound follows each step they take. That sound comes from their hooves and helps them stay together when snow or fog makes it hard to see. Pretty cool, right?

Caribou are full of cool adaptations. Their thick coats help them handle freezing temperatures and their wide hooves act like built-in snowshoes. Even as summer arrives in Saskatoon, these animals are designed for life in some of the coldest places on Earth.

Did you know? Caribou are the only type of deer where both males and females grow antlers. They use them to dig through snow for food in the winter and to protect themselves.

World Caribou Day shines a light on these animals and the work being done to protect them.

While they are amazing to watch, caribou are also facing real challenges in the wild. Habitat loss, climate change and human activity are making it harder for them to thrive. That is why days like World Caribou Day matter. It shines a light on these animals and the work being done to protect them.

The Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo is part of that effort. The Zoo supports conservation initiatives that help caribou populations both in human care and in the wild. It is one more way your visit connects to something bigger.

Next time you are planning a family outing, meeting friends or looking to enjoy the outdoors, swing by the Zoo and say hello to the caribou herd. You will learn something new, spend time outside and maybe pick up a fun fact or two to share.

Sometimes the best summer plans are the simple ones. Fresh air, a walk through the Zoo and a closer look at some truly incredible animals.
